This meditation seat was first created in 2017, with the intention of being a small piece of furniture that sits between functionality and sculpture—much like a Japanese tea bowl, an object that bridges everyday use with ceremonial meaning.

The piece received a design award in Asahikawa, Japan—a city known for its deep appreciation of woodcraft, traditional craftsmanship, and the exchange of knowledge among creators from around the world.

Description

There are moments in the day when we long for an empty space—a space without noise, without messages to reply to, without the urgency to become anything at all. Not as an escape from the world, but as a return to ourselves, simply and honestly.

In a world that moves too quickly, stillness is not a step backward. It is a quiet question: “What is it that still matters to me?” or “Am I truly moving forward, or merely being carried by the wind?”

Meditation is not a symbol of sacredness. It’s a small pause in each day—a moment to listen closely to our own breath, without needing to control or fix anything. Just being with it, and allowing it to be as it is.

Silence doesn’t always mean purity or peace. Sometimes it’s filled with inner noise waiting to settle. Sitting quietly becomes an opening—a space where the heart can breathe, and thoughts can slowly find their own rhythm.

We don’t need to run into the forest to find peace. Even in the midst of a busy city, we can create space for the heart. That space may not be external at all, but rather in the intention we carry—in each moment we choose to pause, to breathe, and to listen without judgment.

To be alone with ourselves in silence is not about finding answers, but about gently returning to what we feel. Like a morning mist that slowly reveals the landscape beneath, clarity comes on its own.

Even in a capitalist world that measures value by productivity, stillness is a way of saying there is more to life than output. Resting is not retreating—it’s returning. Sometimes, simply feeling the rhythm of the breath is enough to know that the heart still has a place to rest.

In the end, meditation may not be the answer to everything. But it is a small beginning—a space that allows the heart to listen once more. A moment to pause, so that when we move forward, it is with direction—not because we know exactly where we’re going, but because we’ve begun to hear what we’re feeling. And for a new day, that is enough.
